Audi A3 TDI gets 71.3 mpg

Audi A3 TDI
Audi A3 1.6 TDI
The north-south trans-European Audi efficiency challenge ended late this week and the 120 customers and journalists covered 4,200 km demonstrating how thrifty these cars can be. As expected, the A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI came out on top of the heap with an average over the full distance of 71.3 mpg (U.S.).

By the time the fleet of 20 cars and SUVs arrived in Italy, the A4 2.0 TDIe had covered the distance at an average of 53.5 mpg, excellent for a mid-sized sedan. However, Audi brought along more than just the usual high-mileage specials. The high performance TT-RS achieved 31.8 mpg. The Q7 TDI clean diesel equipped with the same after-treatment system as the U.S.-spec version averaged 29.4 mpg, similar to what we achieved a year ago on the U.S. mileage marathon. The biggest surprise was the 500 hp Q7 V12 TDI which got 24.8 mpg!

Audi fans will be able to drive the e-tron concept car through PlayStation Home starting later this year. Audi is the first carmaker to develop its own virtual area there, known as the Audi Space. The Audi e-tron, a high-performance sports car with a purely electric engine, was introduced at the International Motor Show. Starting in December, it will be available in the Vertical Run driving game within the Audi Space.

Racing enthusiasts will soon be able to view the Audi drive concept of the future in PlayStation Home, a 3-D social-gaming service for the PlayStation 3 community. Four motors - one per wheel - power the e-tron when it drives along the 3-D racetrack in Vertical Run. The game will be available exclusively in the new Audi Space within PlayStation Home.

"Most young people gain their first driving experience from video games," said Kai Mensing, who is responsible for video games and virtual worlds in online marketing at Audi. "With the Audi Space, we can bring this target group into contact with our brand in a highly emotion-packed and interactive environment, and demonstrate our 'Vorsprung durch Technik' with the virtual e-tron race."

The goal of Vertical Run is to beat the competition in a multiplayer challenge by collecting enough electrical energy and avoiding driving errors in the e-tron, in order to reach the highest possible speed. While all PlayStation Home users will be able to access Audi Space - with its centrally placed tower reminiscent of major cities like Shanghai and Chicago - the Audi apartments located above the city will only be available to the best drivers.

"It was important to us to create an environment with Audi Space that differed from a classic showroom at an Audi dealership," Mr. Mensing said. "To achieve that, we got together with the architects at Allmann Sattler Wappner and developed an interactive concept, where the focus is on selected Audi models, making it possible to experience the brand in a selective, interactive way."

Users don't have to wait until the Vertical Run driving game goes online in Audi Space to find Audi content. Audi TV reports are already available in the cinema within PlayStation Home. In 2010, additional Audi content will be added to Audi Space.

Pink Audi R8 in Holland

Audi R8
when you felt life was getting a little bit boring, along comes this piece of literal Dutch eye candy to remind you that many people are crazy. Yes sir, that's an Audi R8. Yes sir, someone painted it pink. But not just pink – light candy pink with darker pink blades. Now, let's say for a second that the carbon fiber blades are actually baked pink plastic. That would be kinda OK in our book. However, since they are obviously nothing but regular carbon fiber painted pink, we're against them. Moreover, they look slightly purple. And pink and purple simply do not match.

Not that there's anything wrong with pink all on its lonesome. It can be done well, and at least one of us (*ahem*) liked the Mansory Vitesse Rose at Frankfurt. But even if you totally loathe Mansory's handiwork, at least they put some effort into it. From the single photo we got here, looks like the pink R8 is just, sorta... pink. Lazy pink, really. But of course the real reason for this post (besides the laughter) is to figure out what we should call all-pink cars. Because obviously, it's now a trend.

Even though the Russians gave the Emirates a run for their stacks of $100 bills, in the end "all Dubai'd out" beat "all Moscow'd out" in our poll to determine the correct nomenclature for mirror-finished/chrome cars. But then, what to call pink cars? We've got a few ideas listed in a poll after the jump. But if you have your own suggestions, feel free to share them in the comments. Oh, and here's an all gold R8 for you to contemplate while you vote.

Audi new Lightweight A5 Coupe

Audi Tinkers With “Lightweight” A5 Coupe

What happens if you add more aluminum and carbon fiber to an Audi A5 coupe? You’ll likely have something similar to this A5 Lightweight prototype.

Although a normal A5 uses aluminum in its front fenders, Audi engineers went ahead and replaced other body panels with new pieces fashioned from both aluminum and carbon fiber. As a result, the 2.0T test car shaves 220 pounds off a stock A5 2.0T, and Audi claims the car can return performance figures comparable to one with the 3.2-liter V6.

There are no plans on putting this lithe A5 into production, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the use of aluminum and other featherweight materials in future production cars.

“One of our most enduring aims for the future is to reverse the weight spiral,” says Michael Dick, Audi's board member responsible for technical development. “Lightweight design is the foundation of our entire approach to improving efficiency."
