Audi will unveil an A3 sedan concept at Geneva next week that's based on the successor the current A3 hatchback and previews where the A3 line may be expanding in the near future.
Audi is in the process of redesigning its A3, and it will use the launch of the next-generation car as springboard to finally add the long-rumored sedan variant to the lineup. The new Audi A3 concept sedan will come into the light for the first time at the rapidly approaching 2011 Geneva auto show.
At roughly 175 inches long, 72.5 inches wide and 54.7 inches high, it’s more than 6-inches longer, some 3-inches wider and more than an inch lower than the present A3 five-door. According to Audi, the concept’s ‘proportions emphasize the dynamism of the car’s appearance.’ Among the concept’s top design features are what Audi refers to as a ‘flowing roof dome and a coupe-like, low C-pillar’ (heaven knows it wouldn’t be a sedan these days without a coupe-like greenhouse), a new take on the brand’s single-frame grille, and updated LED lightbanks.
Even more dynamism can be found under the hood, where the A3 Concept will feature a version of Audi’s inline 2.5-liter five-cylinder boosted to as much as 408 horsepower, mated to Audi’s seven-speed S tronic gearbox. Of course, quattro will drive all four wheels.

Next-Gen Audi A2

It was never sold in the United States, but the Audi A2 was once a very lightweight small car sold overseas. Available from late 1999 through 2005, the A2 employed an aluminum spaceframe and managed to keep the curb weight below 2000 pounds (for certain models anyway). Now, and after much speculation, it’s coming back in 2015, and Automobile has the scoop on the upcoming car.

If the A2 is coming to the United States, it’ll do so primarily to help with CAFÉ requirements. Now scheduled to ride on Volkswagen’s MQB chassis (shared with the next Golf), the 2015 A2 will have an aluminum five-door body and keep to the lightweight mission. This time around, it won’t have the aluminum spaceframe.
Sans aluminum frame, Audi hopes they’ll sell more A2s compared to the last model. Just 175,000 total were sold in the first run, a small figure considering the European market favors small cars. Automobile says the new car will weigh less than 2400 pounds and is ready to meet the mark by using composite materials for the body panels and thinner glass. The battery, alternator, and air-conditioning compressor will be downsized to keep the weight down.
While the first A2 scored around 80 mpg on the European test cycle over 10 years ago, the new car will be under pressure to produce a similar number despite slight bodily growth. Unlike its predecessor, the impending A2 will get five seats versus four, and is planned to be wider with more interior space for the occupants. The gas and diesel engines will be small, and electric and plug-in hybrid variants are in the planner too. According to development boss Michael Dick, the A2 EV should surpass 150 miles on a charge. The plug-in version is expecting to travel 40 to 60 miles on battery alone.

Audi has finally decided on a launch date and features for the much-expected comeback of its A2 model.
Now slated for an early 2015 release, a couple of years later than Audi’s original schedule, the A2 hatchback will use a lot of aluminium and will offer electric and plug-in hybrid variants as well. Basing the chassis on the relatively cheaper Modular Querbaukaste (MQB) material being under process for the MkVII Volkswagen Golf, the automaker hopes to address its general high cost issues this time around.
Audi is going for a range more than 150 miles for the electric version using a single-speed transmission, pushing out 75 hp to 110 hp. The plug-in hybrid will be seen with three-cylinder engines offering a choice between gasoline and diesel and paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. It is expected to maintain an electric range of 40 to 60 miles.

To bring things closer to the original A2 that boasted of a light 1900 pound curb weight, thanks to the advanced aluminium frame-which also skyrocketed its price value- Audi has turned to composite panels, thinner glass and some cutting down on the size of various parts like the batteries and AC compressor. Plus, the hatch will be more spacious this time around and add extra room for one more passenger to the existing capacity for four.

When it snows here in the UK we're told to pack sleeping bags, shovels and flasks full of tea. Audi man, faced with crossing powdered white mountains needs nothing more than his crisply pressed suit and designer stubble.

His journey is long but immensely enjoyable. We know this because it warrants a montage in Audi's promotional video for the all-new A6, the seventh generation of the German firm's executive saloon that started life in 1968 as the 100. Exactly where the Colin Farrell look-alike is going is anyone's guess but it involves travelling up a lot of hills and through weather that has deteriorated from sun to rain and now lots of snow.

There's trouble ahead for our hero though as just up ahead a recently fallen tree is blocking the road. Outside in the bitter cold people struggle to clear the obstacle, battling with their bare hands to lift, push, pull or roll the huge object - anything so that the road can be reopened. Exhausted and cold they must be relieved to see Audi man arrive, looking young, strong and dressed in completely inappropriate clothes for the conditions. He's clearly a hardy chap; if anyone can help, he can. They wave at Audi man, waiting in hope for their sharp-suited hero to emerge from his remarkably still very clean new car.

He, however, is engrossed in switching on his seat massage function to relieve the boredom of waiting for these peasants to clear the road before giving up and asking his Google Earth enabled satnav to find an alternative route. In a flash Audi man spins his A6 around and, safely cocooned in his bubble of technology, gets on with his clearly very important journey.

We never do find out where he was going, only that he never would have been able to get there without all of the A6's groundbreaking technology. So many systems do Audi's range toppers get these days that the UK operation is considering laying on tutorials for customers in the style of Apple's iStore sessions so that they may start to get to grips with at least some of the following: night vision assistant, head-up display, park assist (both parallel and perpendicular), side assist, active lane assist, wireless internet hub, active cruise control, active lighting, pre-sense safety system and the fingertip sensitive touch pad.

While the outgoing C6-generation Audi A6 made a significant splash at its start of sales in 2004, winning World Car Of The Year honors, the somewhat featureless exterior eventually blended into the woodwork. Worse, the car never really won any hardcore dynamics comparisons, not even in the limited-run RS6 treatments. All the same, that A6 was the best-selling car in that lucrative premium segment worldwide in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
What Audi obviously wants to do first with this C7-generation A6 is seize back its selling supremacy. But Ingolstadt has also been listening to us and to clients when we’ve repeated that we want a lighter car, a better-looking car, and a car with superior dynamics in the class. From our drives of various trims and engines recently in Sicily, the new A6 is, in fact, now the best in its very challenging class. We’ll need to wait and see if Audi can make a great S6 and RS6 to face down the hotter new M5 and E63 AMG top-of-the-range stars, but as for the civilian package, the new A6 beats the others.
Although the eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox that gets such wide use in North America (the only box available on the A6 when it arrives in the States by mid-July) was not available here to test, we still got a clearly good feeling for the car over 200 miles of challenging driving.
It’s amazing what happens when you take 120 pounds out of a 300-horsepower Audi A6 3.0 TFSI (make that 176 pounds less for the re-engineered 3.0 TDI that will probably be coming over to the States later on), give it a longer wheelbase by shoving the front axle forward almost three inches, and make the front axle itself half an inch wider. Then opt for the top-most version of the latest MMI onboard system with 3-D chip and seamless integration of Google Earth. It’s all so stylin’ as to not be believed. If you intend on snagging the S-line package with 1.3-inches lower sport suspension and better steering wheel et al., we recommend not getting the twenty-inch wheels because they freely tramline towards wherever the road imperfections are headed. With the bigger optional wheels, we often needed to nudge the steering wheel back to where we wanted it to go. The nineteen-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zeros solve all of that.
In addition, there is new electro-mechanical steering with optional Dynamic Steering available. Thusly equipped, the new-found precision on this A6 throughout the western mountain roads of Sicily was truly impressive. We dare say that the A6 beats both the heavier 5-Series or latest E-Class in overall feel. Working also with the new-generation of 40:60-split crown-gear Quattro system (introduced on the RS5), also works to the dynamic advantage. Same for the optional sport rear differential with torque vectoring that pays big dividends in all those curves.

It's quite remarkable how, in the short span of a few years, the compact-crossover segment has blossomed from a handful of vehicles to a category nearly as dense as the mid-size-sedan field. But then, small utes are an entirely rational, left-brain purchase, because they offer both family-car practicality and trucklike utility. It's a solid formula for sales, if not excitement.

The Audi Q5 first caught our attention during an April 2009 comparison test against a Mercedes-Benz GLK and a Volvo XC60. Along with sharp looks and a competitive price, the Q5 exhibited a dynamic edge that made it stand out against its rivals. Shortly thereafter, we decided to add one to our Four Seasons test fleet and ordered an ibis white Q5 in Premium Plus trim, which added a panoramic sunroof, xenon headlights, heated front seats, Bluetooth, and a power tailgate. Our only other option was the $3000 MMI navigation system, which also adds front and rear parking sensors and a backup camera.

The Q5's dominant trait is its particularly potent 3.2-liter V-6. The 270-hp, direct-injected engine is fluid, responsive, and strong through the rev range. "At any speed, in any gear, full throttle or part throttle, the 3.2-liter V-6 provides an instant burst of acceleration and never seems to run out of breath," observed assistant editor David Zenlea. The six-speed automatic was similarly both well mannered and frisky. In typical driving, shifts are relaxed and gentle, but drive aggressively and the gearbox cleverly steps up its game.

Even though this car has a four-cylinder engine, the driving experience is not all that different than our recently departed V-6-powered Four Seasons Q5, in that it handles more like a sedan than like a tall crossover. It's missing the $3000 MMI Navigation package, but that's the price you pay for keeping the cost below $40,000, which is pretty darn good for an upscale crossover. One other thing you sacrifice when you forgo the nav package is the radio on/off switch located on the center console, a feature I really like. On the plus side, the transmission in this Q5 has two extra gears.

In cold weather like we've been experiencing, I was happy to see that this Q5 has heated seats, and I think, after a year with our Q5, that I'm finally attuned to the somewhat counterintuitive seat heater controls. I think the confusion stems from the fact that in most cars - make that, in every other car I've driven-- the seat heater and the climate control buttons are discrete units, but in this (and other Audis), they are controlled by the same dials.

The 2011 Audi S5 Cabrio is in for some minimal but effective modification, courtesy of Awe Tuning - a Philadelphia-based tuner specializing in German automobiles.
The tuning kit comprises of a new exhaust system which lets the 3.0-L V6 in the convertible to churn out an extra 8 hp and 9 Nm of torque more than the stock figures. The tuner claims that the exhaust sound will feel like music to the ears, with frequency-tuned Helmholtz noise cancellation resonators to eliminate low rpm drone in the 1000-2200 rpm range. The system is fabricated from mandrel-bent 2.5” T304 Stainless Steel. An X-Pipe provides for an improved cylinder scavenging and exhaust tone.

Given its fearsome reputation, the biggest surprise about the Audi RS 5 is just how civilised it can be.
Locked into comfort driving mode it feels pretty much like any other luxurious German coupé.
Its two plus two seating configuration and spacious boot make a decent stab at transporting the trendy young family.
Fuel consumption will leave you in no doubt there’s something significant under the bonnet, but this really is a car one could happily live with every day.
The flick of a switch on the dash transforms the RS 5 from around-town tourer to sports machine.
The car springs instantly into life and growls at the top of its voice before its occupants are catapulted forward by its huge 4.2-litre V8 powerplant.
Based loosely on the A5 coupé, the RS 5 is a combination of cutting-edge engineering and good old-fashioned raw power.
Its chassis sits 20mm lower than that of the standard Audi A5 on 19in five-spoke Aero design alloy wheels with vast 265/35 tyres.
As well as its trademark oval RS tailpipes, the RS 5 boasts swivelling xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights and a speed-activated rear spoiler.
Inside, black silk Nappa Leather upholstery is complemented by carbon fibre and aluminium elements and additional oil temperature and lap timer gauges.

THE snow, the freeze and the thaw all had their own challenges, which were met for the most part by the public transport system but woefully failed by many drivers and their cars. We are going to have to take this situation very seriously and start planning for more extreme weather conditions, as they do abroad, where it is the norm to change to winter tyres for the whole season.
Many businesses and an awful lot of householders seemed to fall down on the job of taking on some responsibility for keeping the pavements safe. Surely it is not too much to ask able-bodied people that they clear the snow and ice off the pavements in front of their own homes and then do the same for any incapacitated neighbours?
It is a very basic part of being a citizen that you look out for other people and don't expect the "authorities" to do everything for you. I was totally shocked at how many people shirked their obligations. This in turn forced pedestrians to walk on roads and made hazardous driving even more dangerous for all concerned.

Audi developing new diesel fuel cap to avoid misfills

Audi is following BMW in introducing a mechanism to prevent misfueling of diesel vehicles with gasoline. It's generally not possible to put diesel into a gasoline vehicle because the larger diesel nozzles won't fit in the filler neck. However, the smaller gas nozzles will fit in the diesel neck. Audi's system, like the one used by BMW, adds a flap in the neck to prevent fuel flow. The flap only opens up if the nozzle presses on contact points just below the cap. The smaller gasoline nozzle won't be be able to hit all of the contacts at once and the flap will prevent fuel from getting into the tank. Apparently, the improved refinement of modern diesel engines has led to an increase in misfueling in recent years, prompting both BMW and Audi to add the new feature. BMW has had this mechanism in all of its diesel vehicles since early 2009.

The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI quattro will be rolling into German showrooms in the third quarter of 2010. Sales will be starting soon at a base price of €121,000.

Audi is adding another model to its R8 high-performance sports car lineup: Hot on the heels of the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro comes another model with a V8 engine. The 4.2-liter FSI produces 316 kW (430 hp) and launches the open-top two-seater to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 299 km/h (185.79 mph). The engine is mated to the R tronic sequential manual gearbox; quattro permanent all-wheel drive is standard.

Audi R8 Spyder adds another engine

Audi will add a new model to its lineup of luxe sports cars. The R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI Quattro will feature a V8 engine that offers 130 hp less than its big brother, the 560 hp R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI. But with a top speed of 185 mph and only a fraction of a second slower off the line, it's still PDQ.

The upside of the smaller engine is the price: the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI will start at 121,000 euros (about $152,169). It's a nice discount from the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI's base price of 156,400 euros for not a lot of trade-off.

The roadster will be available in the third quarter of 2010, but in the meantime you can watch this clip from National Geographic's "Ultimate Factories" to see how the R8's ultralight aluminum frame is built.

Audi’s Robotic Car Looks Hot In Old-School Livery

The autonomous Audi TTS that will try to climb Pikes Peak without a driver is packed with leading-edge tech, but Audi went old-school with livery that pays homage to its glory days in rallying.

Audi pulled the wraps off the latest iteration of the robotic car we took a ride in a few months ago, and the livery looks great. The stripes recall those of cars like the awesome Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak and Quattro Rallye A2, though the overall look is cleaner.

“We were very much inspired by the Pikes Peak race cars,” Raul Cenan, lead designer on the project, says. “But there was very different technology used in those cars overall. So we decided to go with more modern elements that were heritage-inspired.”

Audi and the guys at the Stanford University Dynamic Design Lab and Volkswagen’s Electronics Research Lab in Palo Alto are constantly tweaking and tuning the 2010 TTS ahead of its ascent up Pikes Peak in September. Pikes Peak is one hell of a place to test an autonomous car — the course is among the most harrowing in motorsports, a flat-out sprint through 156 turns on a 12.4-mile climb to the clouds.

The best drivers attack the route at speeds of up to 130 mph. Chris Gerdes, head of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford, assured us the TTS will be pushed to its limits.

Elton John Audi A1 Sold For 522,000 USD

Do you remember the cute and pink Audi A1 designed by Damien Hirst from a few days back. It was sold at Sir Elton John's auction at the Tie & Tiara Ball last night for 350,000 GBP, or 425,000 EUR, or 522,000 USD. That's more than half a million dollars! The money brought by the auctioned Audi A1 will go to Sir Elton John's AIDS Foundation (EJAF).

Last night's fundraiser featured almost 700 VIP guests from around the world who wished to help the research against AIDS. This foundation, which was established back in 1993, manages over £14 million in programmes across 15 countries. Apart from the research mentioned earlier, the foundation also helps with the medication, nutrition, education, shelter and support for millions of people around the globe.

Audi has great plans for its future and they have declared these for public consumption and appreciation. For a beginning they plan to usher in the new RS3. To be launched at a major auto show, the new RS3 would be using the same engine as the TT-RS, which is a 2.5 liter engine that has direct fuel injection system producing 340 bhp and 330 lb-ft torque. Limited number of this car would be made available.

In 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor show they would be unveiling a car which would be the successor to the current A3. It is being built on a complete new chassis which is the same one being used for the seventh generation Volkswagen Golf. Audi also has plans slated for launch of a compact sports car named R4 as also variants of the A1 and wishes to revive the A2 project which is a completely electric model. The R4 on the other hand would be a hybrid version with a rotary engine installed at the base unit. There is also the emission free version of the R8 sports car that would be launched in late 2012.

What’s more, the rumored R4 is also looking to be based on what is now one of Audi’s most talked about concept cars in recent years, the E-Tron concept that we all laid our eyes on at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

As far as what tech specs will come with the car, it’s expected to weigh in at nothing more than 2,500 pounds and will have either a 1.4-liter TSI engine that produces 180 horsepower or an engine similar to the ones being used in the Audi TT, that is, a 2.0-liter TDI inline-four that produces 170 horsepower. No word yet on how much the R4 is going to command in the market, but the rumor is that it will be slotted just below the TT with it’s price tag of $27,000.

Arriving nearly 10 years after BMW launched the first generation MINI, the A1 gives Audi a new contender in the premium-badged small car category, going up against Citroen’s DS3 and Alfa Romeo’s MiTo, too.

With some 18,000 models expected to be sold every year, Audi is pulling out all the stops. There’s a wide range of turbocharged engines, a long list of options for personalisation and a focus on quality unseen in the class before. The icing on the cake is a price range that starts from £13,140.

So, what’s the A1 like to drive, and is it good enough to knock the MINI off the top spot? Well, the A1 is brimming with showroom appeal. Its chunky shape is attractive, classy and every inch the small Audi, with its bold front end, coupé-style sloping tailgate and optional contrasting roof rails.

Whether you go for SE, Sport or S line trim, you’ll get alloy wheels, stop-start, air-con and a six-speaker CD stereo with iPod connectivity – so there’s no lack of equipment, either. Of the three trims, S line (which we’ve driven here) is the most visually aggressive, with 17-inch alloys and a sharp bodykit.

But next year the A1 will be available with a £1,950 Competition Line pack, which adds even racier looks and stickers to make the car resemble the firm’s classic Quattro rally car.

Inside, the cabin offers quality none of its rivals can match. The dash is covered in a neat soft-touch moulding, all the switches feel slick, and the latest pop-up MMI cabin control system from the flagship A8 is available, too.

As with the exterior, there’s scope for personalisation, with contrasting trim inserts and a range of packs that include kit such as 3D sat-nav, Bluetooth and a 20GB music hard drive.

2011 Audi A1 First Drive

Audi, go ahead and take our cherished ex-child pageant heartbreaker Justin Timberlake to do your celebrity lifestyle pre-launch marketing for your new big-volume car. Quote to us your estimated U.S. fuel mileage numbers in the damned press materials. Invite a few American hacks in to drive the wee one in Berlin. But Valhalla forbid that you should ever deign to export the 2011 Audi A1 for sale in North America.

Through the tree-thick former East Germany over many curve-starved roads, we have just driven around the impeccably put-together 2011 Audi A1. Based on the same chassis underpinning the maybe-for-North-America Volkswagen Polo — 2009 European Car of the Year and 2010 World Car of the Year — the new baby Audi (model "AU210") could hardly be anything but good driving material. We played hard with the current top-trim version, the 1.4 TFSI with its 121-horsepower turbocharged direct-injected 1.4-liter inline-4; it's like driving a nicely warmed-over A3, only smaller and tighter.

The U.S. and Canada do not get the Audi A1. The Germans always tantalizingly qualify this status with "not currently," but it would take a lot to convince Audi North America that it needs to bring over an Audi that's this small and doesn't currently offer all-wheel drive. What a bloody shame, too. The 2011 Audi A1 will definitely have both BMW and Mercedes moving forward the plans for their respective compacts; if the other two don't come out with something comparable soon, they're idiots. (And no, the Mini doesn't count as BMW's premium compact.)

Positioning of the 2011 Audi A1 is pretty clear after a first drive. One intention is to compress several big-car touches from the Audi A8 into a compact layout. One echo of this design impulse is the latest LED headlight design for which Audi has become recognized and which the other Germans are now copying — and which we're also sort of getting tired of already. There's also the new hexagonal single-frame grille first used on the latest A8.

Inside, the touch surfaces are distinctly premium in heft and all the switchgear and stalk design is dedicated for the A1 (part of the sleeker new look we'll see on all Audis from here on). In the center stack area, the latest scaled-down version of the optional MMI onboard functionality is a direct carryover from the new design launched with the A8. Instead of cramming the MMI screen into the center dash as on all sub-A8 Audis, now the 6.5-inch screen pops up from the front shelf, thus separating functions and adding lots of clarity to the layout. The entire area around the driver cockpit now just looks better for it, too.

Audi, an automaker best know for its image of "understated luxury," is busy creating one of the most over-the-top OEM car audio systems that we've ever seen. The Audi Sound Concept takes an Audi Q7 SUV and crams 62 speakers into the cabin. Nope, that's not a typo: sixty-two!

The system consists of five tweeters spread between the dashboard and the rear seating area, a woofer in each of the four doors, a single subwoofer out back, and a whopping 52 midrange speakers wrapping the perimeter of the cabin and enveloping the passengers in 360 degrees of sound. You're definitely not going to want to crank this rig up to 11.

However, there's more to this setup than pure volume. The true reason Audi is going to all of this trouble is a technology called Wave Field Synthesis. In a nutshell, this technology uses an obscene number of speakers to create a virtual soundstage that the listener inhabits. The advantage is that localization is reduced and audio takes on more 3D characteristics than a simple five-channel surround-sound system can offer. Virtual audio sources can move around the listener, above and below, or appear to be coming from outside of the vehicle. And unlike traditional audio arrays, the audio staging isn't dependent upon the listeners' positions. Sound is perceived from the same virtual location by every listener within the ring of sound.

However, don't expect to run down to your Audi dealer next month and pick up a Q7 with the Ludicrous Speaker Package; in its current testing configuration the amount of amplification needed to run the rig doesn't leave much, if any, space for hauling groceries. If the technology in the Audi Sound Concept ever sees the light of day, it won't be anytime soon. We're hoping to see more of this sort of technology when the 2010 car show season winds back up later this year.

"U.S.-specific applications and adaptation are still under way," wrote Audi of America spokesman Christian Bokich in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line on Monday. "So it's too early to speak on pricing, timing or confirmation of this for the U.S.A."

Audi AG introduced the high-tech option on Friday, noting that passengers in the front and rear of the A8 can simultaneously access the Internet using up to eight terminal devices such as laptops, Apple iPads or netbooks.

Audi's been giving test rides up-and-down a halfpipe in Brussels in order to demonstrate the skateboard-like maneuverability of the new Audi A1, but on the fourth day of testing a stunt driver nosed into the wall and flipped over on its side. The car was pushed over by Audi employees and the driver and passenger were quickly freed. The smoking car was then covered up and rolled away out of view of the public.

Just in time for swimsuit season, Audi has trimmed excess pounds and added extra muscle to its midengine R8 sports car. The 2011 Audi R8 GT is now 210 pounds lighter than the current R8 5.2 TSI. The GT also has 35 additional horsepower, for an even 560, that came from fine-tuning the naturally aspirated V-10 engine mounted behind the passenger compartment.

Officially revealed earlier this week in Monte Carlo (where else?), the R8 GT is meant to appeal to well-heeled owners who enjoying exercising their high performance road car on a racetrack. Audi has not revealed the sticker price for the American-spec R8 GT, though Edmunds Inside Line estimated that the price could surpass $300,000 in some European markets. In the United States, a base R8 coupe starts at $114,200.

So what do you get for the wildest version of the R8? For starters, rarity. Audi plans on building only 333 examples at its Quattro GmbH facility, the German automaker’s über-performance center in Neckarsulm, Germany.

Assuming there is a degree of truth to the report from the British mag, the R4 would get a pair of turbocharged gasoline engines (displacing just 1.4-liters and 1.6-liters, respectively) along with the intriguing option of a 2.0-liter turbodiesel mill. Previously, Audi has shown off a small sportscar concept, seen above in the image gallery from Luxist's sister-site, Autoblog, powered by an all-electric powertrain.

Robert Downey Jr. arrived for the premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles in an Audi R8 Spyder. It was a scene straight out of the Marvel Studios movie, in which main character Tony Stark drives the open-top two-seater.

The supercar matches the Super Hero's indestructible suit with its own carbon fiber composite materials in parts of its exterior skin, along with a high-strength aluminum frame known as the Audi Space Frame. And, they both have their hearts in the right place: a glowing artificial one in Iron Man's chest, and an impressive mid-engine design in the R8, which is visible externally.

With its jet propulsion, the Iron Man suit worn by Robert Downey Jr. is unrivalled - and the R8 Spyder, with its 525 hp engine, needn't fear its rivals either.

The 5.2 litre FSI engine of the R8 powers the two-seater convertible to a top speed of 313 kilometres an hour.

Only flying could be better - and in this case, Iron Man clearly comes out on top.

But Robert Downey Jr. hardly needs to concern himself. In the movie, he has the best of both worlds.

The sporty elegance of the Audi A3 models is already perfectly expressed in their design; their harmonious styling now acquires a host of new, exclusive touches. There are gleaming aluminum-look trim inserts on the center console, mirror adjuster switch and window lifter buttons.

Powerful and efficient: the drive train

The engine range for the Audi A3 and A3 Sportback is very extensive - it comprises nine power units, five of them gasoline and four diesel. All are cutting-edge turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection units badged as TFSI and TDI. They encapsulate all the strengths of Audi engine technology - performance, refinement, high torque and efficiency. Five of the nine engines also feature in the new A3 Cabriolet, with the most powerful version reserved for the dynamic S3 and S3 Sportback - the 2.0 TFSI developing 195 kW (265 hp).

The entry-level gasoline version is the 1.2 TFSI; it is a prime example of the merits of Audi's downsizing strategy - prioritizing supercharging ahead of displacement. This four-cylinder power unit develops an ample 77 kW (105 hp) from a swept volume of 1,197 cm3 and generates a hefty 175 Nm of torque (129.07 lb-ft), yet averages just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (42.77 US mpg). The most powerful spark ignition engine for the Audi A3 and A3 Sportback is the 2.0 TFSI with an output of 147 kW (200 hp). It is trumped only by the 2.0 TFSI on 195 kW (265 hp), which is reserved exclusively for the S3 versions.

The TDI range extends from the 1.6 TDI developing 66 kW (90 hp) to the 2.0 TDI, with an output of 125 kW (170 hp). The most efficient engine version in the car line - and one of the most efficient compact models on the market - is the Audi A3 1.6 TDI developing 77 kW (105 hp) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque. It is available in three different versions, the most economical of which is an Audi A3 three-door version averaging 3.8 liters of fuel per 100 km (61.90 US mpg). In-detail modifications to the body and running gear contribute towards this excellent figure, which equates to CO2 emissions of just 99 grams per km (159.33 g/mile).

Audi fits a start-stop system including energy recovery on five engines in the three-door A3 and the Sportback - the 1.2 TFSI, the 1.4 TFSI, the 1.6 TDI developing 77 kW (105 hp), and the two 2.0 TDI versions with outputs of 103 kW and 125 kW (140 hp and 170 hp). In a new departure for compact cars, it is irrelevant whether a manual transmission or the S tronic dual-clutch transmission is fitted. It proves a big advantage in city traffic - it deactivates the engine while stationary and restarts it when the clutch is pressed or, on S tronic versions, the brake pedal released.

An energy recovery system that captures the energy released during braking is a standard feature of the 1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp) engine and the 1.8 TFSI.

The range of transmission technologies is equally very diverse. Most engines in the Audi A3 car line come with six-speed manual transmission as standard; Audi can also supply the lightning-fast, extremely convenient S tronic in conjunction with many of its engines. It is fitted as standard with steering wheel shift paddles on the Ambition equipment line and S3. Depending on engine version, the dual-clutch transmission has six or seven speeds. The seven-speed version operates with dry clutches; the absence of an oil supply improves the transmission's efficiency yet further.

The option of power transmission to all four wheels likewise underscores the exceptional position that the Audi A3 enjoys in the premium compact class. Audi supplies quattro permanent all-wheel drive for four engine versions. The Cabriolet is the exception; on the other hand, quattro drive is standard on the S3 and S3 Sportback. Its electronic-control multi-plate clutch, mounted on the rear axle for a balanced weight distribution, apportions most of the engine's power to the front wheels in normal driving conditions. If need be, it diverts drive torque swiftly and adaptably to the rear wheels.

Smartly sporty: the running gear

The running gear of the Audi A3 car line combines a sporty character with superb safety and high comfort. Its precision and poise stem from technically elaborate solutions such as four-link rear suspension, which handles longitudinal and transverse forces independently, and the electromechanical power steering, which is as responsive as it is efficient.

On all versions with front-wheel drive, the ESP electronic stabilization program incorporates an electronic differential lock. When close to the limits of handling on bends, this intelligent software solution manages how the drive torque is distributed among the wheels by small, barely detectable brake applications. These suppress any understeering, improve traction and further enhance driving safety.

For the engines developing 103 kW (140 hp) and upwards, except on the Cabriolet, Audi supplies the adaptive damper control system Audi magnetic ride, which exploits the properties of an electromagnetic fluid. The dampers can be set for a comfortable or sporty characteristic. Within the parameters, the system adjusts the damping forces in milliseconds depending on the road conditions and the driver's style. The body sits 15 millimeters (0.59 in) lower with this system. There are also the options of conventional sports suspension and the supple S line sports suspension from quattro GmbH. The S3 comes complete with specially tuned 25 mm (0.98 in) lower S sports suspension.

Extensive: the equipment

The improved models in the Audi A3 family will be arriving at dealers in the early summer. Their extensive range of high-end options demonstrates their high technological caliber. These include the dynamic cornering light system adaptive light for the xenon plus headlamps, the high-beam assistant and the navigation system plus with MMI operating logic. It calculates routes particularly fast, has a higher resolution and features three-dimensional map graphics.

The parking assistant is another very attractive feature. When driving at slow speeds (up to 30 km/h, 18.64 miles) its ultrasound sensors scan the parking spaces parallel with the road; when it detects one that is large enough to reverse into, it then indicates this in the instrument cluster. All the driver need do is engage reverse and operate the accelerator, clutch and brakes - the car maneuvers independently and precisely into the space.

Luxury car maker Audi AG (NSU.XE) said Monday that global sales rose 20% year-on-year in February to about 75,900 vehicles as a 62% sales rise in China more than offset a 3.3% decline in its home market in Germany.

"We are on course for a strong first quarter ... (This is) mainly thanks to our leading position in China and Western Europe," Audi sales chief Peter Schwarzenbauer said in a statement. He noted that the premium brand and key earnings contributor of Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE), Europe's largest auto maker by sales, "is also performing very well in the U.S."

Sales in China, including Hong Kong, climbed to 15,108 cars last month compared with 15,647 vehicles in Germany. Audi's two-months sales suggest that China might outpace Germany as the brand's largest single market this year, underscoring a broader geographic shift among auto makers toward Asian growth markets.

In January and February, Audi sold 31,906 cars in China, up 86% year-on-year, compared with 27,304 cars in Germany, up 1.7%. Audi previously has said it expects China to become its largest sales region in 2012 or 2013.

China proved to be one of the few bright spots for luxury-car makers when demand evaporated in other major markets amid the economic downturn and is now driving the segment's recovery.

Audi emerged from last year's industry gloom relatively unscathed and narrowed the gap to its larger premium-brand rivals BMW AG (BMW.XE) and Daimler AG's (DAI) Mercedes-Benz marque last year due mainly to its strong presence in China and a smaller exposure to the troubled U.S. market.

Audi ranks third in global luxury-car sales behind BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but it retains a firm grip on the top position in China, which it gained thanks partly to the early market entry of its parent company. Audi plans to launch its A3 hatchback in China this year and aims to ramp up local production as well as expand its dealership network.

Audi's sales totaled 43,127 cars in Western Europe last month, up 6% compared with the same period last year.

The 2011 Audi A7 is sporting a new feature we hadn't seen on the A7: an automatic spoiler.

Riding on a version of the next-generation A6 platform, the A7 will go into production in the second half of 2010. In the United States, we can expect Audi's 300-horsepower, supercharged V-6, along with a 4.2-liter V-8.

Volkswagen's luxury brand Audi is racing ahead of VW's other makes and generated more than 85 percent of total operating profit in 2009, according to group figures released on Thursday.

Audi's operating profit of 1.6 billion euros (2.2 billion dollars) was nearly three times that of VW's eponymous brand, which posted a profit of 561 million euros.

VW's finance unit was the second biggest contributor to operating profit, turning in 606 million euros.

In terms of unit sales, Audi sold just under 950,000 vehicles, less than one quarter the 3.954 million VW's delivered last year.

"Without Audi, VW would not be profitable," German car expert Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer from the University of Duisburg told AFP.

The VW group "does not pay enough attention to costs," he added.

VW, Europe's biggest carmaker, aims to overtake Toyota as the world number one by 2018, and sell more than 10 million vehicles per year at that point.

To reach its goal, VW is ramping up local production in Brazil, India and the United States, countries where chairman Martin Winterkorn said the group was "under represented."

Audi, the A1, was introduced as scheduled at Geneva. An unexpected version, however, was the somewhat mind-boggling A1 E-tron concept. The fast-developing E-tron electric-car technology — “still only a few months old,” as Audi proudly notes — has yielded a robust-looking third family member (after an R8 E-tron and a more TT-sized E-tron). This smaller third version, however, is more of a serial hybrid (with range-extending technology) than a pure electric car. Audi A1 E-tron Power comes from a torque-rich 45-kilowatt electric motor, or the equivalent of around 60 horsepower, driving the front wheels. For short bursts, however, the electric motor can produce up to 75 horsepower (and 177 pound-feet of torque). Audi says the A1 E-tron can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 10 seconds. Top speed is about 80 miles per hour. It will travel up to 31 miles on electric power alone, which isn’t really good for much. But for an extended range of up to another 124 miles, the battery pack can be charged by an onboard 20-horsepower, single-rotor Audi A1 E-tron 253-cc Wankel rotary engine (fed by a 3.17 gallon fuel tank). Otherwise, the A1 E-tron can be recharged in less than three hours on a 380-volt circuit (good luck finding one of those).

The five-door hatchback with an added bonus of a load carrying wagon has enough room for comfortable seating of four. Audi A5 Sportback is available in two engine versions of the 2.0 TFSI and the 3.0 TDI, with standard Quattro all-wheel-drive and S tronic for both. Power output for the 2.0 TFSI measures 155kW with peak torque of 350Nm available from 1500rpm to 4200rpm. While it gets from naught to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, it also gobbles up 7.5l of gasoline/100 km.

The more powerful 3.0 TDI gushes out 176kW of power with 500Nm of torque between 1,500-3,000rpm. The diesel motor can propel the Sportback from zero to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds and will consume 6.6 litres per 100km.

With high hopes pinned to its new A5 model in the Australian market, Audi Managing Director Joerg Hofmann foresees it as a volume-selling model for the A5 range.

The German automaker unveiled the second iteration of its sweet electric concept here at the North American International Auto Show. It is sleeker, simpler and less powerful than the concept first seen at the Frankfurt auto show in September and then at the Los Angeles show last month. But it looks less like a concept designed to wow journalists and more like a production car designed to attract buyers.

That sound you heard was Elon Musk and Henrik Fisker screaming in anguish. The Audi e-tron could unseat the Tesla Roadster and Fisker Karma as the sexiest EV on the road when it appears in 2012.

Version 2.0 is leaner and more aggressive than the first e-tron, which looked a lot like the R8, and draws styling influences from the TT and the S5. The proportions are spot-on: the car is 70 inches wide, 154.72 inches long and 48 inches tall.

Audi has radically simplified the drivetrain, opting to put two motors at the rear axle instead of one at each end. That means the car no longer has all-wheel drive. The motors are liquid cooled and rated at 75 kilowatts (about 102 horsepower) apiece. The first version produced 313 horsepower. Look for a zero to 100 km/hr time of 5.9 seconds, which is about one second slower than v1.0 and two seconds slower than the Roadster. It’ll need another 5.1 seconds to get from 100 km/hr to 120 km/hr.

The car rides on an aluminum and carbon fiber space frame, and most of the body panels are fiber-reinforced plastic. Audi claims the car weighs 2,976 pounds — about 550 pounds less than the first e-tron — and has a weight distribution of 40:60. Torque-vectoring directs power to the rear wheels as necessary for optimal traction. Flaps at the C-pillar open and close as needed to provide cooling air for the motors and battery.

Audi unveiled a second compact electric car concept in Detroit that's similar to one unveiled in Frankfurt and Los Angeles a few months ago, which is also called the e-tron. Audi is using the e-tron name as a sub-brand, similar to how it uses "Quattro," that will be applied to a number of different vehicles. The Detroit e-tron is smaller and lighter than the previous e-tron weighing in at just under 3,000 pounds. Two electric motors on this rear-wheel drive vehicle produce a combined 204 hp. With the aluminum body and coupe design, Audi claims it can go 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The lithium-ion batteries are located behind the passenger compartment and in front of the rear-axle of this two-seater, which helps save energy and allows a possible driving range of 155 miles. Another energy saving feature is the use of a heat pump, which heats up and maintains the interior temperature.

The engine data rises to 442 hp and 625 Nm of torque at the price of 8.950 Euro. To reach the final performance of 450 hp and 640 Nm of torque, the B&B engineers have fitted the refined car with a high performance charge-air cooler manufactured specially for the Audi TT RS, which possess bigger volume, more effective flow and larger surface. Stage 4 is price tagged at 12.950 Euro.

To handle the increased power data, B&B is offering several chassis modifications, for example 20mm lower sport springs or adjustable thread chassis. Audi don't quite have anything new for the Indian market to show off at the Auto Expo this time round, but they do have a very interesting pavilion. Among a flurry of all of their existing models including the A4, A6, A8, Q5 and Q7 are the Audi TT and the R8 in brilliant new colours. But the central theme of Audi's display has more to do with where they're coming from and where they're heading. Starting off with a whole lot of nostalgia is the magnificent Audi Front 225 Roadster from 1935 celebrating the theme of the Audi stall - 100 years of Vorsprung durch Technik at Audi. Bringing things to the present era is the fabulous R8 sports car and giving crowds a taste of the future from the German marque is the Audi Sportback concept - showed off for the first time in Asia at the auto Expo. The Sportback is powered by a 3 litre V6 TDI engine giving it blistering performance - 0-100km/h in less than 7 seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h! But all that doesn't quite hamper on the fuel efficienct front - at 5.9 litres per 100km, the Sportback is highly efficient too!

That's not all though - after all it wouldn't be a true celebration of 100 years of the brand if their customers weren't getting much out of it, would it? Well, there are quite a few initiatives outlined by Audi for that very purpose. First off, the monstrous Q7 gets an all-new engine option - a massively powerful 4.2 litre TDI unit that makes it the most powerful diesel SUV available in India. The central exhaust system is specifically created for the 4.2 V8 Audi R8. Eisenmann says that no extra horsepower is produced by adding the system.

As extra you can adjust the rings inside the exhaust system by means of a remote control. Price for this package is €9,400 (£8,490 – $14,180).

Those who think the central exhaust pipe is just a bit too futuristic can also choose for a V10 look-a-like. This one will produce a better sound, but will definitely be less spectacular than the one placed central.

Senner Tuning from Ingelheim, Germany, has unveiled their latest addition to its line-up of programs; the kit for the Audi R8 4.2 V8 FSI. The Super Sport Concept program consists of upgrading the exhaust system, the suspension, installing a performance upgrade and swapping the standard rims for a 20-inch wheel set.

Thanks to new engine management, the use of special sport air filter inserts – double performance air filter kit with frontal inlet for mounting into serial air filter casings – as well as an exhaust system including valve control, engine power increases up to 458hp. At the same time maximum torque reaches 470Nm.

Senner Tuning has installed new rims sizing 9×20” or 11×20”. The diamond/black/polished two-part twin spoke alloy rims are completed by SportMaxx 235/30-R-20 or 305/25-R-20 Dunlop tyres respectively. Sport suspension springs put the R8 about 25mm closer to the asphalt on the front axle and 15mm on the rear axle.

A new version of the Audi A3 1.6 TDI goes on sale this week, with reduced CO2 emissions of 99g/km and combined economy of up to 74.3mpg.

The new A3 is available as a three-door only equipped to standard specification and priced at £18,005 OTR. All other variations of the 1.6 TDI continue to offer 68.9mpg and 109g/km CO2 output.

The key elements responsible for the efficiency gains include a modified final drive ratio for the standard five-speed manual transmission, a reduced ride height, under-body revisions to reduce aerodynamic drag and the use of slightly smaller 15-inch alloy wheels shod with low rolling resistance tyres.

Despite its reduced 99g/km CO2 output, the A3 1.6 TDI has the same 105PS power output and 250Nm peak torque as all other versions, and consequently matches them on performance, clearing 62mph from rest in 11.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 121mph.

Only the Germans are brave enough to sell diesel-powered cars and SUVs in the US. While today’s diesels are legal in all 50 states, produce no smoke, and sound as quiet as gasoline-powered cars, most automakers avoid them like the 13th floor.

Which is a pity, considering that diesel engines offer greater fuel efficiency and pulling power. Witness the three-row Audi Q7 TDI and its colossal 406 pound-feet of torque, which the V-8 model and its EPA 13/18 rating can’t match.

If you want a diesel with a small footprint, get the $22,660 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. If you’ve got to cruise large with all the trimmings, it’s hard to pick a diesel that’s more well-crafted and stylish than the Q7.

Audi says the production version of the E-tron will hit 125 mph.

The Audi E-tron is a concept supercar with an all-electric drivetrain. Top speed on the production version will be electronically limited to 125 mph, while 0 to 62 mph will come up in just 4.8 seconds, Audi says.

While it looks an awful lot like an R8, and while it also has an aluminum spaceframe just as an R8 does, Audi says the only thing you see on the E-tron that is shared with its internal-combustion sibling is the windshield.

Power goes to all four wheels from a stack of lithium-ion batteries the diameter of soda-pop cans jammed in the space behind the two seats and in front of the two massive rear motors. Two smaller electric motors power the front wheels. Thirty percent of torque goes to the front, 70 percent to the rear. The battery pack makes 42.4 kilowatt-hours of energy, which allows a range of 155 miles.

The Audi E-tron will go into production in late 2011 with a cost that will be more than the R8 V10's current tab of $155,100, Audi says.

When the 2010 Audi S5 Cabriolet arrived this summer, it did so with little fanfare. It acted as if it had always been around and everything was completely ordinary.

However, this particular convertible is anything but ordinary. In a move by Audi AG, the new convertible was designed to line up the brand's coupes with its convertibles. Good bye A4 Cabriolet, hello S5 drop top.

No longer will Audi's entry convertible be based on the timid A4 styling -- it gets to take on the looks of the sharply refined A5. It's the difference between looking like George Clooney and me.

There's a standoffish coolness about this car that hints at its abilities that other drivers tend to underestimate. Its unassuming angular good looks help define the S5. Many of the other European convertible coupes have gone to hard tops while the Audi decided to use a high-tech cloth top that can fold up in under 20 seconds while the car is driving up to 30 mph. The S5 convertible meshes the past and the future, it's part Ph.D. and part old school. The S5 doesn't hide the fact its top can come down, it celebrates it.

The big grille and open intakes below the bumper aren't just there to look mean, they're there to force more air into the supercharged V-6 that will eat the competition's lunch as if they were a couple of sliders on a Friday night.

That little red S isn't just a decoration to sparkle on the door sill and steering wheel. It's Audi's equivalent of an 82nd Airborne Division patch on a soldier's right sleeve -- combat proven. It doesn't take prisoners.

The S5 convertible uses a new supercharged 3-liter V-6 that courses 333 horsepower through its veins and 325 pound-feet of torque through both axles with Audi's Quattro drive. The newest Quattro drive system allows Audi to favor the rear axle in a 60/40 power split that helps the S5 maintain its race car-like handling. This system also allows the car to manage the power from wheel to wheel in each axle and its self-locking differential can send power to whichever axle has the most traction.

The seven-speed dual clutch glides through gears effortlessly and responds to the driver's wants and needs. It can change gears in two-tenths of a second. Drive aggressively, and it will keep each gear longer, winding out the revs with mechanical precision. There is no hunting for the next gear or a hesitation between them. The S5's tranny reacts almost before you knew what you were going to do.

When the next-generation Audi A8 launches in 2010, the car’s MMI navigation system will feature the first in-car connection to Google Maps. With the connection, drivers will be able to search for points of interest like “deli” or “movie theater” and get directions to the nearest such locations. You can also choose destinations online via Google Maps or a special Audi website, and then retrieve them from the car’s navigation system.

Later in the year, the MMI system will also be able to stream real-time imagery from Google Earth. That means drivers can see 3D aerial photos on the A8’s navigation screen. Streets and directions will be overlaid on the Google Earth images. The map data is downloaded over cell phones connected to the navigation system with Bluetooth.

Audi will reveal its long-awaited city car, the A1, online early in February, 2010 and a month later at the Geneva auto show.

The cars will inevitably do battle with the evergreen BMW-produced Mini but Audi says it will be the first automakerto offer a premium car in the sub-compact segment when it launches the A1.

If this computer rendering supplied by the Motor Authority website is anything to go by, the A1 will have unmistakable Audi DNA - it looks at lot like the existing A3 - only smaller.

Little else is known about the A1 - not prices, not engine size(s) - but expect Audi to release more information gradually in coming weeks.

As this holiday season proves again, sometimes packaging is as important as the gift itself. That's how it is with the Audi e-tron -- an all-wheel-drive, all-electric, high-end sports car.

Though a concept for the moment, Audi is talking as if e-tron will become a production model by the end of 2012 that could sell for around $200,000. Styling, for the moment, is much like the R8 sports car without the carbon-fiber panels.

Audi e-tron goes through its paces with a California Highway Patrol cruiser bringing up the rear -- and ignoring speeding violations.

The packaging is the car's amazing looks and gimmicks -- from wind scoops that automatically open when the car needs cooling, sensor-activated door handles and the high-tech headlights. The gift is its performance -- zero to 60 miles per hour in less than 4.7 seconds and a torque curve that never seems to let up. Here's how we know:

A little background. Drive On was invited to a remote section of stretch of ocean-view highway north of Los Angeles to give the e-tron a try. Audi has set up a little encampment in a parking lot north of Malibu where the red car is kept in a shelter, tended to by a clean-diesel generator to keep its batteries refreshed through multiple test drives. Several highway patrol officers were hired to block traffic and for pace car duty. Pretty fancy set up.

The Audi A3 TDI has been chosen as the 'Green' car of the year at the Los Angeles Motor Show with consumption listed at 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres while making no sacrifices to comfort and other features.

It is the second year in which a diesel car has been chosen for the award after last year's prize went to the VW Jetta. The other finalists chosen by the jury of car and environmental experts were the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, VW Golf TDI and Ford's Mercury Milan hybrid.

The editor of Green Car Journal, Ron Cogan, said the jurors were impressed by the '50 per cent better fuel efficiency' compared to the similar petrol-engine A3.

Cogan added that this year's list of cars was the most competitive 'which clearly shows that the car industry is on the right track' in offering more environmentally friendly vehicles.

The A3 TDI sells for about 30,000 dollars in the United States.

Audi will not follow BMW in trying to position itself as a green brand, according to company boss Rupert Stadler.

Stadler said that, while Audi will always try to build as efficient vehicles as possible, it would never sell its cars on the back of being a green brand.

"We will stick to our Vorsprung Durch Technik philosophy, not have a catch-all marketing claim such as Efficient Dynamics," said Stadler. "We're convinced in Vorsprung Durch Technik, we're a dynamic, sporty brand but not necessarily positioned as a green brand. That will come about as a matter of course.

"We want to take out weight and want to further diesel and FSI technology. We can still improve fuel consumption. But we will not position Audi as a green car brand - we will fulfil regulations - but we are also an emotional brand."

Stadler also said that Audi wouldn't put an electric car on sale until it was convinced it would give the sort of performance Audi buyers have come to expect. However, he did commit to putting the Audi E-tron into production by 2012, adding that the possibilities of electric power were interesting.

"We have to optimise performance of electric cars," he said. "Performance is part of our emotional appeal, so it’s very important.

No, no. This car. This car here will be in production by 2012,” Johan de Nysschen, president of Audi of America, told me Thursday, pointing to the brilliant orange e-Tron. “And no, it will not be some watered-down version.”

What they didn’t say: Audi has been such a staunch proponent of diesel as the best fuel economy solution, it is hard to believe it is now moving ahead so quickly with a seemingly competitive technology — electricity — that it once dismissed.

What makes it tick? Four electric motors at each wheel, generating a total of 313 horsepower and a roll-your-eyeballs-back explosion of torque: 3,319 pound-feet, about 10 times that of the gasoline-powered R8 V-8. Zero to 60 m.p.h. takes just 4.8 seconds, the company says, and the top speed is 124 m.p.h. The lithium-ion battery pack is said to deliver a 154-mile driving range.

How much, how soon? Available in very limited numbers by the end of 2012. Any price speculation is purely speculative at this point, but it will be north by northwest of the $150,000 sticker on a loaded R8.

How’s it look? Like an R8 with furnace grates. Mr. de Nysschen says you can expect the production version, which will take shape over two or three years, to become “more emotional.”

At last week's tony Design Miami reveal of the 2011 A8 luxury cruiser, we were able to corner Johan de Nysschen, Audi's executive vice president in North America, and ask him for some tasty tibits on the brand's upcoming products, including the A8's sexier derivative, the A7.

In addition to giving us the first official confirmation of the A7's existence, de Nysschen revealed that the four-door coupe model will slot in "a little bit below" the new A8 in terms of pricing, just as we expected. Of course, it's worth noting that the 2011 A8 faces a price bump due to substantial increases in content and technology, so when the A7 finally comes to the States, the average model is likely to sticker at around $82,000-$83,000, which de Nysschen says is about the price for a typically equipped 2010 A8 (pricing starts at $74,550 plus delivery).

Based on Audi's new longitudinal modular platform technology, the A7 will be clearly related to the A8 (and the A6 replacement that will follow it), and de Nysschen says that the 2009 Detroit Auto Show Sportback concept car serves as a "very reliable indicator" of what the production model will look like. Judging by recent spy shots from our friends at KGP, that very much appears to be the case. While parts commonality will be "substantial," de Nysschen says that the A7 will not use the full aluminum spaceframe design of the A8, although it will have aluminum elements.

As expected, the A8 will launch Stateside in both standard and long-wheelbase formats, with the latter predicted to make up the lion's share of the volume (the A8L presently accounts for about 80 percent of the model's sales).

Just before the LA Auto Show, Audi introduced the redesign of its flagship A8 in Florida. The new A8 is two inches longer and wider than the old base model. A stretched L version will arrive in about a year. It uses a similar all-aluminum space frame as before.

Despite the physical change, the new car isn’t revolutionary, but it is awash in new high-tech features. For instance, it has a standard navigation system that allows destination inputs by writing words and letters on a touch pad with your finger. Other notables include the first full-LED headlight system and adaptive cruise control that integrates traffic data from the navigation system. Like other recent Audis, the door handles become a contemporary pull-type rather than a lift up type.

The A8’s direct-injected V8 has 22 additional horsepower (for 372 total), and it is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission for better fuel economy. (The outgoing A8L returned 17 mpg overall in our tests.) Standard equipment includes all-wheel drive, adaptive air suspension, pre-collision avoidance system, and a lengthy roster of power amenities.

The A8 can be further outfitted with radar-guided cruise control, rear collision sensor, and lane-change warnings. With these systems, if the driver fails to slow down when approaching an obstacle, the A8 will sound an alarm. If there’s still no response, it will vibrate the steering wheel and begin to apply the brakes.

The 2011 A8 goes on sale around the end of 2010.

Audi is working hard on a car that doesn’t require the driver to anything except sit there and watch the scenery go by. It’s called the “Autonomous Audi TTS,” not the catchiest of names, and it’s “intended to explore the best capabilities of current and future driver assistance technologies.” (Pics and video)

The car is a joint project between the Volkswagen Group Automotive Innovation Laboratory (VAIL) in Palo Alto, Calif., and Stanford University. Audi, which is part of VW, thinks lessons learned from the project could help reduce traffic deaths and reduce road congestion.

It could also help with the more mundane aspects of driving. With the Autonomous TTS, you could let your car go find its own parking space in the garage. “The technology could return time to the cars’ owners by taking care of routine driving chores, such as winding through a parking garage to an assigned spot each morning,” Audi says. And, of course, you can find cool ways to torture test the car:

One idea is a run up Pikes Peak. That would be fun: say goodbye at the start. You might see the car again; you might find it in a ravine a few days later. The 12.4-mile course is used for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and could provide a “non-competitive environment that would allow the Autonomous TTS to show its capabilities at various speeds and conditions, including drifting.”

But not too much drifting. Otherwise, it will go right off the side of the mountain.

Could racing cars driven by robots one day compete with the best F1 drivers in the world – and beat them?

Audi is investigating the technology and has built this ‘Autonomous’ TTS which it is considering sending up the infamous Pikes Peak hill climb.

Audi claims:

The Autonomous Audi TTS project is not aimed at making motorists, or the thrill of driving, dispensable. Instead, it is intended to explore the best capabilities of current and future driver assistance technologies to help Audi enhance the experience behind the steering wheel for future driver generations.

But executive director of the Electronics Research Laboratory Dr Burkhard Huhnke has high hopes for the technology:

We believe that developing a car that can perform as well and respond as rapidly as a ‘professional’ driver, like a race or rally driver, will eventually be able to drive its way around incidents in a way that a ‘normal’ driver couldn’t.

May we one day see the famous Gary Kasparov-versus-Deep Blue chess match re-created on a racing track? How well would such technology work in an F1 car up against the likes of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton?

It’s surely only a matter of time before someone tries it out. But I’m not sure watching a car driven by a robot could ever compare to the thrill of seeing a human tame the raw power of a racing car.

Even if Audi get their driver-less TTS to the top of the hill without it falling off, this is the Audi I will always associate with Pikes Peak:

2011 Audi A7 uncovered in a testing lab in Germany. Audi will not leave the field with the Audi A7 four-door luxury saloons in the coupe-style competition from Mercedes CLS, Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera.

2011 Audi A7 will be powered by a pair of petrol V6s 204hp (152kW) 2.8L engine in the base model, while a 3.0L supercharged engine making 300hp (225kW) will be the first step up. An upgrade to S7 trim will bring with it another 94hp (70kW) in the form of a 4.0L V8. The RS7 range topper will get the same 5.2L V10 from the RS6 but power will be boosted to 600hp (450kW).

Audi makes A3 2.0 TDI greener

Audi has launched a 'stop-start' version of the 2.0-litre TDI A3 with improved fuel economy and lowered CO2 emissions.

Power remains unchanged at 138bhp, but the car uses green technology, including an engine 'stop-start' system, to deliver dramatically improved efficiency.

Audi has also introduced a part-time alternator, which recharges the battery under braking, recuperating energy that would otherwise be lost.

CO2 emissions slashed by 16%
The package of changes mean that the A3 2.0-litre TDI hatchback now manages an average of 64.2mpg – up from 55.4mpg on the non-stop-start version – while CO2 emissions have fallen by 16% from 134g/km to 115g/km. Company car tax liability is cut from 18% to 13%.

The new efficiency measures mean that the A3 2.0-litre TDI is almost as green as the less powerful 1.6 TDI (67.3mpg and 109g/km) and better than the similarly powerful BMW 118d, which manages 62.8mpg and 119g/km with a manual gearbox.

The A3 Cabriolet 2.0 TDI gets the same green technology, which helps to boost fuel economy from 53.3mpg to 61.4mpg and cuts CO2 emissions from 139g/km to 119g/km.

Prices remain unchanged, with the entry-level A3 2.0 TDI three-door costing £18,860.

IF you thought that Audi's R8 V8 supercar was fast at 4.6 seconds to 62mph then the V10 version's 3.9 seconds will convince you that you are at the wheel of a true road rocket.

Not that you would use such power in everyday driving, especially on British roads, but it is there lurking in this surprisingly practical beast that has rocked the world of elite motoring.

By practical I mean that it is very manageable in traffic, has the option of a conventional manual gearbox, can cope with average speed humps and most importantly is massively reliable.

It has also caused shockwaves because it is the only production car under £140,000 to combine a mid-mounted engine with four-wheel-drive.

And it is blisteringly fast. With its 197mph capability it takes the podium from the Aston Martin DB9 at 190mph, the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S at 185mph and the Maserati Gran Turismo S at 183mph. It is also the best accelerating car in its class - the Aston Martin DB 9 at 4.6 seconds to 62mph being the only one that can get anywhere near it.

The R8 V10 is also receiving accolades for having the most powerful engine in its class - a 5.2 litre V10 with 525PS on tap - not to mention the best power to weight ratio and excellent residual values.

All this is fine but I was bowled over not by the car's attainments but with the way it copes with everyday driving while having such massive power.

I would not use the words docile or tame, but the R8 V10 was surprisingly manageable in traffic with a clutch that did not snatch or judder and roadholding and brakes that most of us just dream of.

Its road manners are by virtue of Audi's so-called 'magnetic ride' adaptive damping system which is added to the highly-praised Audi double wishbone suspension system.

You do have to keep an eye on the speedo though because the V10 is so smooth and surprisingly silent. This is the only thing that you really have to worry about with this car. In fact it could do with more roars to match the 'Phwoars' from other drivers and passers by.

The new Audi A5 Sportback has been awarded a Golden Steering Wheel in the mid-sized vehicle category by Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

Considering that this is Audi's 18th Golden Steering Wheel in the 34-year history of the competition, that is no mean feat.

It drew the attention of the judges through its elasticity and acceleration and earned brownie points for its exterior design, interior design and user-friendly operation.

The panel's technicians were also impressed by the vehicle's perceived quality and build quality, and emphasised on the ease of repairs.

Motorsport testers praised the combination of an outstanding chassis as well as first-rate steering and braking. Its engine was also thought to be the best and the transmission was highly regarded.

The A5 Sportback tested was a 3.0 TDI quattro equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission.

The Golden Steering Wheel panel of judges consisted of VIPS, technical experts, racing and rally professionals as well as editors-in-chief of the international subsidiaries of Auto Bild. Cars were put through their paces on a closed testing ground.

The new R8 with its 5.2-litre V10 engine is just plain radical. Not only does the R8’s monster, naturally aspirated engine attain the Holy Grail of more than 100 horsepower per litre of engine displacement, it only has to motivate 3.1 kilograms of automobile for each of the stallions it develops. It is a wickedly fast automobile.

The V10 is a work of art, delivering 525 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, 80 per cent of which is ready to run at 1,000 rpm. The engine also uses dry sump lubrication, which prevents the precious internal components from starving for oil when the car is pulling its mind-numbing maximum lateral 1.2 g force.

Power is fired to the road through a six-speed manual transmission or Audi’s optional R tronic box. The manual’s gate is easy to live with and the clutch pedal action is pleasantly light. The sequential R tronic has paddle shifters and accomplishes what’s needed.

From the transmission the power reaches the massive P235/35R19 front and P295/30R19 rear tires through Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system. In this case, the system sends 85 per cent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels, which imparts a rear-drive feel to the road-ready race car.

When it comes to handling, the R8 is nothing short of amazing. The two-mode system (comfort and sport) delivers the right amount of damping. When loafing along, the ride comfort is commendable. Yes, it is firm, but it does not rattle your fillings loose. Drop the hammer and the lot firms up to banish body roll. Factor in the razor-sharp steering and a massive set of brakes (optional ceramics on the test car) and the R8 can be driven into a corner at alarming speeds without fear of fade.

When not thrashing around a race track, the R8 V10 does an impeccable impersonation of a full-on luxury car. The wingback seats are wrapped in buttery-soft Nappa leather, there’s a full-on navigation system, power everything and a delightful 425-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system with 12 speakers.

Audi announced today that its latest A4 2.0 TDI e will be available starting in early June. The new vehicle is equipped with 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine connected to a 6-speed manual transmission and delivers an impressive fuel consumption: 4.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (51.13 miles per U.S. gallon).

It consequently emits a mere 119 grams of CO2 per kilometer (191.51 grams per mile), which according to the manufacturer it is the best value of any vehicle in its class. The ‘e’ model has 136 bhp (100 kW) and sprints from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds while the top speed is limited at 215 km/h (133 mph).

The estate version of the A4 is nearly identical to the sedan from the B-pillar forward, but now features 50-cubic feet of cargo capacity out back. An optional power liftgate is available and the load floor is reversible if you happen to be toting a set of used wheels in the trunk and the mat is coated in brake dust. Overall, the Avant gains about five inches in length, but is almost ten-percent lighter than the outgoing model.

Although powerplant details are scarce, those of us in the States will be stuck with the 2.0-liter TFSI mill, while sedan buyers get a choice of either the four-cylinder or the 3.2-liter V6.

For the new Audi A5 + S5 Cabriolet the VW / Audi specialist B&B, based in Siegen / Germany has a wide tuning program finished, which allows the strongest Audi A5 Cabriolet with a 3.0TFSI engine to reach up to 415 hp and 520 Nm. For this a new developed sport exhaust system will be installed, which decrease the exhaust gas back pressure and the temperature of the exhaust gas. In association with an optimized airflow and re-balanced engine electronics with slightly increased boost pressure the achievement potential is as high as in actual sport cars - in addition the build in speed limit will be removed and the new residual speed is up to 285 km/h.

The A5 Cabriolet 3.0TDI will reach up to 325 hp and 640 Nm. The three stages of the tuning program for the A5 3.0TDI starts with an electronics change and a slightly increased boost pressure of 0.15bar, this let the engine reach 280 hp and 585 Nm for EUR 1.198,-. To advance the stability at fast cornering and high highway speeds B&B install a special adjustable suspension, which is possible as comfort or sport version and which is adjustable in height by up to 40 mm. In combination with the B10 and B12 wheel set with a size of 9"x20" and a maximum tire equipment of 255/30-20 a higher cornering speed will be reached and in addition a better handling. Also new 40 mm suspension plumes and different exhaust silencer are available. A new aerodynamic program with shapely exhaust-pipe end in "RS-Style" rounds up the exclusive external of the Audi A5 Cabriolet.
